Throughout history, portraits have been an important part of our culture. A portrait gives us a place in history - they immortalised us.

Until the advent of the camera, portraits were painted by artists. Photography was a whole new media and so more and more people were able to be portrayed.

Even with the sudden growth of digital cameras, one might think there would be no longer be a need need to create a special portraits but this is not the case because people need to look good.

Unfortunately most snapshot pictures capture us at our worst. It has often been said that the camera does not lie, but people do not necessarily want to see the whole truth. The portrait painters knew this well and learned how to present their subjects in a favourable light. The same discretionary lighting can be used use in photography, but the most flattering images are those that appear natural. These pictures not only depict what we look like but can tell the onlooker a little about who we are.
